Rwanda 2023: Resilient community through Forestry Landscape restoration Project.

Community resilient through Forest Landscape Restoration project (FLR) following a tree planting agreement between Organization for Support to the Environment Protection and Climate Change Adaptation (OSEPCCA-NGO) and One Tree Planted under the TerraFund for AFR100 Program. This collaboration, which spans from December 2023 to December 2029, focuses on various restoration activities including seedling production, tree planting, maintenance, and community capacity building.

The Organization for Environmental Protection and Community Climate Change Adaptation (OSEPCCA) is currently implementing a landscape restoration project in Rutsiro District, Boneza sector. We are restoring 280 hectares of degraded land by planting 150,000 trees, including both indigenous and exotic species. These trees are agroforestry species designed to enhance agricultural production, alongside shrubs that serve as fodder for animals. Additionally, we are planting fruit trees which help to reduce malnutrition and generate income for local communities.

This restoration effort is generously funded by TerraFund for AFR100, with Rutsiro District local authorities providing crucial support for the project’s implementation. Since the project’s started, 749 local people have been employed in various activities, including tree planting, nursery preparation, site preparation, weeding, and watering. 369 men and 380 women were empowered, but also youth among them are 265 making up the majority of the workforce.

To achieve these goals, OSPECCA will combine capacity-building efforts with technical support to promote agroforestry practices. We train Block leaders as farmer’s facilitators to help the famers to understand well the project.  Over the six-year period, the project aims to plant 280 hectares of AF trees, in RUTSIRO District

Up to now, OSPCCA has done establishing tree nurseries to produce 180,000 tree seedlings of AF which will be planted in boneza site of boneza sector, Rutsiro district and most of the trees seedlings are scheduled for planting in community farms in October 2024.

We aim to plant 150, 000 seedlings in total: 35,000 Maesopsis eminii, 30,000 Albizia gumifera, 40,000 Sesbania sesban, 10,000 Grevillea rubasta, 2,500 Alnus acuminata seedlings, 2,500 Calliandra Calothyrsus seedlings,2,500 Leucaena diversifolia seedlings, 2,500 Cedrela serrata seedlings, 5,000 Persea amercana seedlings, 5,000  Psidium guayava,  15,000  Trema Orientaris.
